Bonbon Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City, found in the southern part of the Philippines has a vast shoreline. This means that CDOC, as it is fondly called by locals has many beaches, which makes this city the place to be this summer!!!!!

Although the sand is not white but gray, it is still very fine, so walking by the beach is a very pleasant and enjoyable experience.

Let’s start with the most accesible beach – Bonbon beach, Cagayan De Oro Philippines. From the city proper, you can see jeepneys going to Bonbon. For less than P20 pesos (1 way, $.50), one can reach Bonbon. There is no entrance fee!!!! The huts can be rented for P200 – 400 ($5-10) for the whole day. If you plan to stay for an hour or two, and you do not want to rent a hut, just spread your towel under the Talisay trees, and run to the sea, no cost incurred – no fee collected!

This may not be a white beach comparable to Boracay, but picture this – fine sand, coconut and Talisay trees all over, fresh air, and all for free! If you get hungry, just buy grilled Tulingan (similar to tuna, at P30 or less than $1) and puso (rice cooked inside coconut leaves, P15 $.30), and eat with your bare hands, only at Bonbon beach, Cagayan de Oro!

It is best to come early, so you can choose your spot, whether a hut or under a tree. The early mornings at the Bonbon are very relaxing. You can see fishermen in their bancas just arriving from overnight fishing, and you can buy fish if you want. You can just listen to the birds while watching the calm sea.

The nights are also magical. Cool air, cool beach water, and the aroma of fish grilled right before your eyes make the nights equally enchanting.

For those who want to stay overnight, there are huts with rooms and depending on your budget, the price ranges from P500-P1500/ hut.

Cagayan de Oro White Water rafting

Water Rafting cdo, is supposed to be a side trip turned out to be one of the highlights in our trip to CDO-Camiguin. For our white water rafting Cagayan de Oro experience, we hired no less than Kagay, Cagayan De Oro’s best, and we paid 700 each and it was so worth it.

I first hesitated in going white water rafting in cdo, as we were traveling on a budget (as always), and were only 5 in the group and the minimum required is 6, so we paid extra. Most of us don’t have any idea, that it was one of the most unforgettable experiences we have as friends.

As soon as we arrive in Cagayan De Oro airport about 8 in the morning, Kagay rafting crew was already there waiting for us, they’re actually easy to spot, just look for a jeepney with two giant rafts on the roof. They advised us to have our breakfast first as we will surely need the energy, so we had our breakfast in one of the turo-turo at the airport. Then we boarded the jeepney, and travel up the mountain for about 30mins, we stopped at a place where they usually start their beginner course for water rafting. We changed our clothes and put sun block on, definitely put sun block on especially on your face and neck.

We left our stuff inside the jeepney, yes! Inside the jeepney! Our cell phones, cameras, and wallets are all there inside our bags. We hesitated a bit but we were assured that our driver, a baranggay captain will take care of our bags.

Before with hit the waters, we had briefing with how to maneuver the raft, as well as different calls and signs. One thing that gets stuck with our mind is “Okay FORWARD” our guide have his own way of saying it.

Kagay offers to have them take photos of you throughout the ride down the river, and they’re pro rafters, imagine taking photos standing up at the rapids.

But it’s also a good idea if you have your own waterproof camera as well; taking photos at the raft is fun.

When we got to our first white water, it’s a mixed feeling, the sound of the rushing water, the speeding raft, and anticipation got our hearts pumping, it’s just too scary to get thrown out of the raft, and I almost went out on the first one.

The course was a series of rapids as they only last a few seconds then it’ll be calm water, we got de-sensitized as each one pass. Until he told us we’ll be standing up on the next one. And man, that was scary!

The beginner course last a couple of hours, and there are stretches of calm waters, where we are allowed to swim in the river, and the boat ride is scenic as well.
At the end of the course, there’s a place where you can take a shower, and change clothes. It was about an hour past lunch time. The jeepney, where our bags are there waiting for us. The Kagay crew dropped us in the city, where we had our lunch, before departing to Camiguin.

We dropped by in their office a couple of days later before we return to Manila, to get our photos burned in a CD.
